A Story About Marguerite & Sid

In the spring of 1936, ten year old Sid Suhler was heading back to Houston with his parents on farm to market road 86. They had been to the Texas Capital to take part in some of Texas' Centennial celebrations. Seeing a stock tank next to the road Sid's dad pulled over and decided it would be a good idea to catch a few fish for dinner. This was a time when people freely shared what they had as the depression wore on. So stopping at a strangers tank to do a little fishing was not seen as trespassing as long as you were polite and cleaned up after yourself.

Sid jumped out of the car and went running to look for the best fishing spot only to find another family already there. The Machemehls were also returning from the Centennial festivities in Austin on their way back to Bellville. Of the three Machemehl girls Sid instantly took a liking to Marguerite. She & Sid set off to find more bait for fishing. They caught grasshoppers and dug for worms and grubs. Back at the tank they took turns sharing a cane pole Marguerite's dad had made. After a few hours both families got in their cars and headed home. Sid meant to write to Marguerite but could not fine the piece of paper she had written her address on.

Sid had become vice president of Texas Neon Sign Company in 1951. This was a family business responsible for creating signs and movie theater store fronts up and down the gulf coast. They even lit the top of the San Jacinto monument with neon back in 1939 which as part of the Texas Centennial. Sid was still living in Houston when he was setup on a blind date in late January with a girl who worked in a bank. When he met his date it took all of about two minutes for him to realize this was the girl he had gone fishing with 15 years earlier. Four months later Marguerite & Sid were married. They shared their love of the outdoors and fishing which played a major role throughout their 45 years together. And it all started at this little tank in Suhlerville.

As with all good stories, part of this one is actually true.
